Update: the ABC have posted an article on our criticism of these laws.
The Australian Democrats are calling for the scrapping of WA’s draft sex work laws because they will lead to increased discrimination and health risks for sex workers. WA State President, Jason Heeris, says the government should go back to square one and consult with the sex industry itself to produce a model that protects and respects the workers.
“This legislation was developed by an unaccountable working party that refused any input from the sex industry, and the lack of informed input shows,” said Mr Heeris. “Requirements for fingerprinting and full identification to clients treat sex workers as criminals, and will only force people to break the law if they want to protect themselves, leaving them with little recourse to an already unsympathetic justice system.
“For all the rhetoric about protection and exploitation, these laws are designed to expose sex workers — and their friends and families — to violence, intimidation, harassment, humiliation and discrimination, not just while they are in the industry, but for their entire lives.
“Similar laws in Queensland and Victoria have only resulted in widespread non-compliance and higher rates of sexually transmitted infections than states which do not have this style of law. Mounting evidence from Australia and internationally shows that decriminalisation of sex work is the most effective way to improve conditions and health for both workers and clients, and we will continue to support such an approach.”
The Democrats have a proud history of defending the rights of sex workers and campaigning to improve their conditions and status, arguing that the issues are occupational health and safety, not criminal matters.
“I urge concerned Western Australians to voice their opposition to the proposed sex work laws before the deadline for submissions on 29th July,” said Mr Heeris.
